Blackjack is a card game also known as Twenty-One. You’ve probably heard of this casino game because of its popularity in both land-based and online casinos. However, there’s a misconception about the rules of blackjack. Most people assume that the object of the game is to get as close to 21 without going over it.
While this holds some truth to it, the real object of blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. It’s called a blackjack when you get 21 points exactly on the deal and you win 3:2 or 2:1.
But before you go and try your hand on blackjack, you must first understand the rules of blackjack thoroughly so you can come up with a good strategy to win.
Blackjack can be played with 1 to 8 decks of 52-card decks. Aces are counted as 1 or 11 points, 2-9 follow their number values, and the face cards score 10 points. The value of a hand is the sum of the point values of the given cards.
Before the dealer distributes cards, players will have to place their bets. Minimum and maximum limits are established on the betting, and the general limits are from $2 to $500. Then, the dealer will provide two cards to himself and each player. One of the dealer’s card is dealt face up while the other is facedown which is called the hole card.
Play begins with the player to the dealer’s left side. You have 5 options on what you can do:
- Stand – You do not ask for another card.
- Hit – You ask for another card to attempt to get closer or hit 21.
- Double – You double your bet and get one more card.
- Split – In the instance of having a pair of 10-point cards, you may double your bet and separate your cards into two individual hands. This means the dealer will give each card a second card. Then, you may stand, hit, or double normally.
- Surrender – You forfeit half of your wager and do not play out your hand.
After all the players have their turn, the dealer turns over the hole card. If the dealer has 16 or less, he will draw another card. Then, if he busts or goes over 21 points, players who didn’t bust wins. In the event that the dealer doesn’t bust, the higher point total between the players and dealer wins.
Blackjack Rules: Soft 17
The combination of an ace with a card other than a 10-point card is known as a soft hand. This is because you can count the ace as a 1 or 11. An ace-6 hand is a soft 17 and so is an ace-3-3 hand. These hands are played differently than their corresponding hard hands. For example, ace-6 is soft 17 whereas 10-7 and 7-9-ace hands are hard 17’s. The hand is a hard one whenever there is no ace, or one or more aces that each count as one.
The Soft 17 rule requires the dealer to hit on a soft hand. Some casinos require dealers to stand when their hand is a soft 17, whereas others require dealers to hit soft 17. Usually, the dealer will bust more often when the Soft 17 rule is in effect which is good for players.
